The Erosion Continues      by Dave Batcheller

For at least two generations America has experienced a gradual decline or erosion of  both moral values and adherence to the U. S. Constitution.  This erosion has been both pervasive and relentless, seemingly driven by major shifts in our culture and popular opinion.  The incremental removal of our Judeo-Christian heritage continues on as well, unabated.  During my lifetime alone, we have witnessed the banning of prayer and Bible reading in public schools, and more recently the public display of the Ten Commandments.  We have witnessed the “sexual revolution”, the rise of feminism, legalized abortion, and the emergence of open homosexuality and same sex “marriages”.  The American family, along with our understanding of American history and our Constitution, have all been reinterpreted, distorted and blurred to such a degree that the average citizen can no longer discern right from wrong.

Many boast of technological, scientific and cultural progress, but we are now being confronted with the mind boggling ethical issues of fetal and stem-cell research, genetic “selective choices” and euthanasia.  One would think that any person still possessing a moral conscience would be outraged and speaking out to stop this madness.  In reality, we find instead, an American population lulled into complacency and silence, willing to trade liberties guaranteed by our Founding Fathers for a false sense of security and prosperity.

In 2005, this erosion has deepened the emerging chasm between true conservatives and those who are intent on redefining our American way of life.  It is clear that both major parties are in a relentless shift to the left.  Rhetoric creating the illusion of conservatism in the Republican Party is all that remains, and the Democratic Party is firmly entrenched in liberal values and socialism.  This year has clearly demonstrated that all three branches of our government are seriously out of touch with the vision and intent of our Founding Fathers, as well as the limitations placed upon them by the Constitution.

The Executive Branch this year has continued to focus on an unconstitutional and questionable war in Iraq, while ignoring the serious threat of illegal immigration and our own open borders.  The President was even quite vocal in criticizing the Minuteman Project as a bunch of “vigilantes”.  He was a chief proponent of CAFTA, a trade agreement that will continue to siphon off American jobs to other countries and eventually lead to the emergence of the regional unification of the entire Western Hemisphere.  This year, the President has also demonstrated his true colors in his choices for Supreme Court nominees.  With all of this, no wonder his approval ratings are so low that even many loyal conservatives are beginning to consider jumping from the Republican ship.

In 2005, the Legislative Branch has “kept pace” by approving CAFTA, renewing the Patriot Act, and passing bills for a National ID Card, and a Federal “Anti-Hate” bill.  Piece by piece, so gradual that many Americans don’t notice, Congress continues to contribute to the erosion of the liberties guaranteed by our Constitution.  Looming on the horizon is further legislation regarding anti-terrorism, income tax deductions, gun rights, the FTAA trade agreement, and a possible military draft.
